About Banner Elk Kiwanis

OUR HISTORY

 The Kiwanis Club of Banner Elk was founded in March 1968 by a group of individuals that wanted to help the youth of Avery County North Carolina. 


Following the mission of Kiwanis International to Serve the Children of the World

About BANNER ELK Kiwanis

OUR MISSION

Kiwanis of Banner Elk is dedicated to helping the youth in our community.  Over the past 40 years we have given out over a million dollars in grants to help  organizations that focus on the youth.  With the Woolly Worm Festival every third weekend in October,  our Duck Races in July and other events. We are blessed with the opportunity to help our local community.

Banner Elk Kiwanis received the Distinguished Club award at the 2024 mid year district convention. This award is given to the club that 

Kiwanians and clubs that meet established criteria demonstrating special dedication to service, membership strength and Kiwanis education.

Kiwanis of Banner Elk was honored to be "Charter Organization of the Year" for Mt. Mitchell District of the Daniel Boone Council. Mt. Mitchell District encompasses Avery, Mitchell, Yancey, Madison and the north half of Buncombe counties. Kiwanis of Banner Elk 

was selected because of the support it has given to the three Scout units Pack 8

Kiwanis of Banner Elk was honored to be "Charter Organization of the Year" for Mt. Mitchell District of the Daniel Boone Council. Mt. Mitchell District encompasses Avery, Mitchell, Yancey, Madison and the north half of Buncombe counties. Kiwanis of Banner Elk 

was selected because of the support it has given to the three Scout units Pack 807, Troop 807 Boys and Troop 4807 Girls. The support and involvement the Kiwanis Club far surpasses any other Charter Organization in this district and council.

Jud Godwin and Alice Courtland have been recognized and received the Community Organization award. This award allows them to wear the square knot that denotes that a Scout volunteer has been recognized by a national chartered organization partners for Scout service within that organization.

        Community Service

        community service is an important part of our commitment.  from cleaning up roads sides, to building children's  parks; Banner Elk Kiwanis is dedicated every year to helping our community improve its appearance to all our visitors. 

        Grants to the community

        Giving back to help our local non profits and organizations that help children.  From our Woolly Worm festival to our July fourth Duck Races Banner Elk Kiwanis has given back close to a million dollars to organizations that help our local kids.

        Terrific Kids

        All Avery County Elementary Schools will be taking part in the Terrific Kid program.  It is a program that promotes character development, self esteem and perseverance.
