Our Story

Founded in 1968, the Kiwanis Club of Banner Elk began with a small group of local citizens who wanted to support the youth of Avery County. What started as a modest effort has grown into a vibrant, community-rooted club focused on empowering the next generation through education, leadership, and service.

What is Kiwanis of Banner Elk?

Kiwanis of Banner Elk is a volunteer-led service organization and part of Kiwanis International—a global network of clubs working to improve the lives of children around the world. Locally, we focus on supporting the children of Avery County through direct programming, service projects, and community grants.

The Kiwanis Foundation

The Kiwanis Club of Banner Elk Foundation is a separate, independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit managed by a board of directors made up of both Kiwanis members and community leaders. This foundation is where individuals and organizations can donate to directly support youth-focused initiatives in Avery County.

While the Foundation and Club work closely together, they operate independently to ensure thoughtful grantmaking and responsible stewardship.
